OnStar on point!

The GM OnStar system is just what the doctor ordered. I recently investigated and even talked to police officers about the abilities of the OnStar program and how it’s latest feature can even help you get your stolen car back safe and sound.

How many models can you get the OnStar program in? All most all the GM cars and trucks and by 2009 all models will have the ability to have OnStar in them. I’m sure you’ve all heard the commercials on the radio talking up OnStar but if your wondering what services they have here they are: Vehicle Diagnostics check-up, Hands free calling, and Turn by Turn Navigational system and they also have the standard calling on the OnStar 911 service which allows you to report accidents and also report any problems that maybe happening that need EMS support like a passenger having a heart attack or a woman about to give birth. The systems that were reported to be used in the GM cars and quite nice and they give you a diagnostic report to your email and you can take that to any GM service center to get any complains solved or problems fixed.

Now with this latest service of being about to slow down a car and render it useless when it gets stolen is great but to find out other advantages to the OnStar system I went to the best source I know for such information the police department. Once there I spoke to a friend of mine who’s an officer who told me a rather interesting story. Late one night my friend was on duty and got a call from OnStar saying that a car of theirs was reported stolen and they would like for them to go out and recover the car. The officer replied how? The OnStar operator to the my friend that they would turn the GPS system on and would tell them just where to go. Once the officer reached the location they looked around and said “Well, we’re here but your car isn’t”. The operator replied let me turn on the head lights and with that the lights came on the car but my friend still couldn’t see the car so then the operator said well here let me hit the horn. And like a beacon in the sea the officers heard the noise and walked out in the middle of a field and saw that the car had been covered with a big brown tarp. Now you talk about COOL! Granted if your on the other side of the law it sucks but most of us usually stay on the right side unless we’re speeding =) .

I highly recommend that if you already have a GMC product that you turn your OnStar on and you use it cause if not your only wasting a chance that it could and would save your life.

Great post - I didn’t know OnStar did all of that.

If only OnStar was available in other vehicles. Or better yet, if we had the option to purchase an after market OnStar setup for our current vehicles. Oh well, maybe one day.

Well Ford has the Sync system and their pushing that hardcore! But it doesn’t have the emergency response item like OnStar has.

True. I was at a car show out here in California a few months back and Ford had their Sync on display. It looked pretty neat but I didn’t get enough time to experiment with it. I’ll have to read up on it.
